Reception Blog ~ Friday 9th February 2024

This week our focus text is “Handas Hen” by Eileen Browne. This is the sequel to the modern classic, Handa's Surprise, two girls count all of the exotic and exciting animals they discover as they search for their grandma's hen. We have been comparing the setting of the story (where Handa lives) to where we live!

In Maths this week we have been making doubles! We are so clever and have been exploring making doubles in different ways using a variety of resources to help us write our very own number sentences.

Read, Write, Inc.

This week we have had a RWI we have been continuing learning in our sets and have been practising our reading at writing skills.

Here is a link to demonstrate how we say the sounds:

More of us are ready to begin blending sounds into words. You can find out more information about this here:

‘Jolly Phonics’ has some great songs that children can learn at home to support their phonics development:

Here is a link for you to use to explore tricky red words:

Pupil voice:

“Handa has a pet hen and I have a pet cat!” – Layton

“The chicken had eggs in the bush!” – Elizabet

“The African Lizards are blue and our lizards are boring anf green or brown” – Lotanna

Food at Phoenix

The menus for school dinners are on the school website – please share these meals with your children as there have been some changes to the Spring term menu. The children are still working hard on developing their fine motor skills and controlling their knives and forks. We would love for this to be encouraged and continued at home please. 😊

  • Please remember to pay your story teller money for when we have our amazing story teller visitor on Wednesday 14th February.
  • Please remember that we have PE on Mondays in Reception and we need all earrings removed and appropriate clothing in school for that day 😊

Thank you for your continued support!

Kindest regards,

The Reception team.
