Reading Books

Children in Year 6 are expected to read at home each day, either to a family member or independently.  Please ensure reading records are brought to school daily and signed when your child has read so it can be included in their termly reading challenge.  We can then also write in them when they read with adults in school.

Each Year 6 pupil is aiming to have read 12 books by the end of each term. If completed the pupils will receive an exciting reward. If a pupil reads 12 books in each of the three academic terms they will receive a final reward at the end of the year.

6M are reading lots in school, please continue to read with them at home to help them reach their target!

P.E

Year 6 will have weekly P.E. although sometimes the day it is on may change. Therefore please ensure that your child has their P.E kit at school every day. Your child will need a white T-shirt, black shorts and suitable footwear (trainers/plimsolls).  In the winter months your child can wear black tracksuit bottoms and a jumper.  Hair should be tied up and earrings MUST be removed. Your child will not be able to join in with P.E if they have earrings in.

This week in Year 6 we have worked hard to practice key Maths skills and revise previous learning. Some of us have been practising to find a percentage of an amount and some of us have been revising converting measures.

“I feel like I really know how to find a percent now.” KE

As part of our new English book ‘Orange of No Man’s Land’, we wrote a media script detailing the key elements of the civil war in Lebanon. We used this as a way to practise the skill of using speech.

“I can’t believe what it would be like to live in a country that was at war. It must be so hard.” FF

As part of our computing topic, we researched into how search engines find the information use look for using search engines such as Google or Yahoo.

“I always wondered why they come up in the order they do -now I know its how they are ranked.” SS

6M had their workshop from Maldon and Essex Lifesaving Club.

The main aims of the workshop was to learn:

  • How the body works
  • Putting someone into a recovery position
  • How to make a 999 phone call
  • Helping someone with a heart attack
  • How to use a defibrillator.

We watched a clip called ‘Milly’s Day’ which demonstrated how a child could be in a situation where they may need to give an adult first aid. We looked at how to assess an incident, check for danger and deliver first aid.

“This was so good. We even got to use a model version of a defibrillator.”  FF

“I feel like I could help someone if they needed first aid.” MS

The children learnt CPR though listening to the beat of ‘Staying Alive’. So much so, they continued to sing it at break and lunch time!
