The Phoenix Primary School and Nursery is proud to be involved in a new literacy initiative, along with the other schools in our Multi-Academy Trust, called ‘Wondrous Words’. The aims of the project is to increase the children’s range of vocabulary, as well as their understanding of words.
For the remainder of the school year, we will be assessing the difference we can make to the children’s language acquisition. In order to support this, each class will now display the new focus words and we will play word games to recall their meaning. We will learn, define, act-out and draw these words, in order to help consolidate them into our vocabulary.
Children in EYFS and KS1 may come home from school wearing a ‘Ask me about my word’ sticker. We will also send home a copy of our focus words in homework folders for you to
keep on your fridge so you can join in the fun and learning at home!
In addition to this, it is vital that you discuss the meaning of words that arise in your children’s reading books. Often, we as adults, presume that children understand the simplest of words and that is not always the case. So please make sure you discuss the words that they come across in their books to deepen their understanding and comprehension skills.
