Year 2 Update

Good morning 2W,

Mrs Hamilton and I are missing you all and are looking forward to seeing you all soon. We hope that you and your families are keeping safe and well. We hope you are enjoying the lovely weather and helping your families around the house.

Below, you will find a fantastic bank of resources that you can access to continue with your school work at home. I recommend the Oak National academy website for great lessons which you can join in with.

I will be setting extra work on J2E and purple mash. Lots of children have been completing work online and it has put a big smile on our faces to see all of your beautiful work from home. If you are unsure of your child's login details, please contact the school office.

Young Writers

The ‘Young Writers’ website are running poetry competitions as a fun activity to use for home learning. You can use the downloadable worksheet, or children can write / type their poem instead. An engaging video can be used for support.

KS1- There is a ‘Little Riddlers’

They are offering prizes, depending on the age of the child, and the deadline for entry is Friday 24th July 2020.

Celebrations, Festivals and National Events

Below are some current events that you can discuss with you child.

July is Transition Month. It’s a great time for your child to reflect on the last year and share some of their happiest or it’s a fun memories, as well as what they have learned before moving on.

Mandela Day

Mandela Day is an annual event named after Nelson Mandela and is designed to encourage everyone to take action against poverty. A United Nations (UN) international event held every year on Nelson Mandela's birthday, Mandela Day was founded on the principle that we can all give a little bit of our time to have a positive effect on the life of someone else. We can all make a difference in our community and help change the world for the better!

When is Mandela Day 2020?

Mandela Day takes place every year on 18th July. In 2020 the aim is to encourage people, governments, businesses and society to focus on 5 key areas:

Summer Reading Challenge

Details of the summer reading challenge can be found at the above website.

Basildon library opened on Monday 6th July and Laindon library is due to open on 13th July.

Stay safe,

Miss Williams

The Oak National Academy

The Oak National Academy  is a new,  online classroom and resource hub. They provide a bank of high-quality, sequenced video lessons and resources for a range of subjects.

English ~ Phonics/ Reading

In school we follow a phonics programme called ‘Read, Write Inc.’ ‘Read, Write, Inc’ are uploading daily phonics lessons onto their YouTube channel.

Phonics Play allows children to practice their phonic through a game. Phonics Play have provided free subscription during this time. Log in details can be found on their page-

Oxford Owl has free e-book access during this time to allow your children to implement the phonetic skills they have learnt. We would recommend daily reading with your child.

Vooks is a website/app where children can access books that are read aloud. They are offering one month free through their website.

Alongside the children’s phonics work, we would highly recommend the children completing reading comprehensions. Many of these can be accessed on Twinkl by searching ‘Year 2 Reading Comprehension’.  (Password: CVDTWINKLHELPS)

Also if you search SATS parent guide on twinkl, there is a downloadable PDF on what your child should know by the end of year two. Although SATS is not going ahead this year, it will significantly benefit your child revising what they need to know for when they enter KS2.

We would also like to draw your attending to the Year 2 common exception words and high frequency words on Twinkl.

Again, the expectation is that children can read and spell these words by the end of year two.

Twinkl also has a plethora of phonics and story activities for you to access.

Literacy Shed has some fantastic activities packs based on short clips. Children should be familiar with this website and the activity packs cover a wide range of skills.

To support our teaching of Maths, we follow a programme called ‘The White Rose.’ They upload daily maths sessions which is led by video and also has an activity sheet available.

Snap Maths and Twinkl also provide a range of number and number sentence worksheets, which may be of help.

Children may also access TT Rockstars (Log ins were sent home but if needed, please telephone the school office who will be happy to re-provide for you.) to develop their multiplication knowledge. Hit the button game is also a much loved game in year two. Daily 10 is also a game children favour. It focuses on the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and allows the children to set a time in order to complete ten questions. The children love this game as it can become very competitive! also provide a range of mental maths games suitable for year one children.

Other Curriculum Areas

Purple Mash-

Log ins for Purple Mash were sent home in your child's report. If you can not locate this, call the office as they have a copy of children's logins.

J2E J2E is a website full of different activities that covers a wide range of curriculum subjects. Again, your child's log in was sent home with their report. If you can not locate this, call the office. I have also uploaded a task for English and Maths on J2Homework. It will show me when your child has completed this. I will then award them with a point on J2Stars, this will hopefully motivate your child to complete some work at home.

BBC Bitesize As of Monday 20th April, BBC Bitesize will be uplaoding daily online lessons for all ages. In the meantime they have a lot of games/videos and information on all subject areas.
