Welcome Message

Below you will find important information regarding your child's PE time slot and information on reading and homework.

At the bottom of the page you will find the children's class blog- a weekly update of all the exciting things that happen within year 2! Enjoy!

Reading Books

Year 2 will have the opportunity to change their own reading books daily. We will visit the library weekly, usually on a Thursday.  Children will bring home their choice of a library book. Please ensure book bags are in school each and every day as we will be reading with each child throughout the week.

Your child will receive English and Maths homework every Friday, and it is due back in school on Wednesdays. Children will receive a house point for every piece of homework that they return to school. Please encourage your child to complete their homework, and support them if necessary. If necessary children can complete their homework or practise their spellings in homework club on Wednesday and Thursday at play time. They will be given words to learn to spell on a Friday, and will be tested in school on the following Friday. If your child does not bring their homework home, please see their teacher as soon as possible as the books are used for a lesson every Friday.

P.E Days

We will have P.E weekly, sometimes on Tuesday, and sometimes on a Friday morning, but this is subject to change, so please ensure that your child has their P.E kit at school every day. For health and safety reasons hair should be tied up and earrings MUST be removed for P.E. Your child will not be able to join in with P.E if they have earrings in.

Year 2 Update

Hello 2C

There are two very important festivals coming up.

From 28th-30th May it is Shavuot.

Shavuot is a Jewish festival celebrated 50 days after the first day of Passover. It is a period of commemoration to remember the day that God provided the Torah to His people on Mount Sinai. Shavuot is also known to be a Harvest Festival, as a former tradition was for Jewish people to bring Bikkurim (the first and finest fruits) to the Temple in Jerusalem as a gift to God.

On May 31st it is Whitsun.

Whitsun celebrates the Christian festival of Pentecost which occurs on the seventh Sunday after Easter when Anglican and Methodist communities commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus after his ascension from earth to heaven on Ascension Day.

Any work that you complete when researching the festivals can be uploaded to J2E for your teacher to look at.

Well done to all of you for the fantastic homework and online work that you have completed so far.

Remember to help your parents around the house, be kind and be safe.

Below are some activities that you can complete at home to help children towards the year 2 expectations. These resources are fantastic to promote independent learning and very closely match what we are doing in school.

Stay safe and keep smiling.

Home learning

The Oak National Academy

The Oak National Academy  is a new,  online classroom and resource hub. They provide a bank of high-quality, sequenced video lessons and resources for a range of subjects.

English ~ Phonics/ Reading

In school we follow a phonics programme called ‘Read, Write Inc.’ ‘Read, Write, Inc’ are uploading daily phonics lessons onto their YouTube channel.

Phonics Play allows children to practice their phonic through a game. Phonics Play have provided free subscription during this time. Log in details can be found on their page-

Oxford Owl has free e-book access during this time to allow your children to implement the phonetic skills they have learnt. We would recommend daily reading with your child.

Vooks is a website/app where children can access books that are read aloud. They are offering one month free through their website.

Alongside the children’s phonics work, we would highly recommend the children completing reading comprehensions. Many of these can be accessed on Twinkl by searching ‘Year 2 Reading Comprehension’.  (Password: CVDTWINKLHELPS)

Also if you search SATS parent guide on twinkl, there is a downloadable PDF on what your child should know by the end of year two. Although SATS are not going ahead this year, it will significantly benefit your child revising what they need to know for when they enter KS2.

We would also like to draw your attention to the Year 2 common exception words and high frequency words on Twinkl.

Again, the expectation is that children can read and spell these words by the end of year two.

Twinkl also has a plethora of phonics and story activities for you to access.

To support our teaching of Maths, we follow a programme called ‘The White Rose.’ They upload daily maths sessions which is led by video and also has an activity sheet available.

Snap Maths and Twinkl also provide a range of number and number sentence worksheets, which may be of help.

Children may also access TT Rockstars (Log ins were sent home but if needed, please telephone the school office who will be happy to re-provide for you.) to develop their multiplication knowledge. Hit the button game is also a much loved game in year two. Daily 10 is also a game children favour. It focuses on the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and allows the children to set a time in order to complete ten questions. The children love this game as it can become very competitive! also provide a range of mental maths games suitable for year two children.

Other Curriculum Areas

Purple Mash-

Log ins for Purple Mash were sent home in your child's report. If you can not locate this, call or email the office as they have a copy of children's logins.

J2E J2E is a website full of different activities that covers a wide range of curriculum subjects. Again, your child's log in was sent home with their report. If you can not locate this, call the office. I have also uploaded a task for English and Maths on J2Homework. It will show me when your child has completed this. I will then award them with a point on J2Stars, this will hopefully motivate your child to complete some work at home.
