Impact Learning

We are one year into a very exciting whole school programme which will have an impact on childrens learning. The children will talk about Learning Zones and Learning Detectives and Learning Passports. We all know we come to school to learn but do we know how to learn? Have we been taught the skills needed?

Carrie Sabin-Young is working with us using materials she has developed to enable the children to become effective learners and for us as a staff to become even more effective teachers. In a recent Ofsted inspection (January 2008) the following was highlighted by the inspection team and we believe this to be a direct result of the Impact learning whole school programme. (the full report can be found through the link on the curriculum page)

‘Pupils are happy and enjoy lessons and learning.'

‘In both the Nursery and Reception classes staff place a very strong emphasis on developing the children's communication skills and they constantly explain how to give longer and more complex answers to questions.'

‘The focus on strengthening the involvement of pupils in their own learning helps them to understand both what is to be learned and how best to learn it. This has had a positive effect on both pupils' progress and their self-esteem.'

‘Classrooms are generally calm and purposeful places in which pupils concentrate well and take pleasure in explaining what they are doing and how they will meet the clear objectives for each lesson'

‘Senior staff are accurate in their appraisal of the school's strengths and the strong focus on boosting pupils' learning is having a very positive and beneficial effect on pupils' achievement.'
